EXPECTATIONS:  Nurses are expected to provide basic medical care, dispense over the counter (OTC) and prescription medication, and provide basic triage and simple diagnosis of injuries/medical problems.  Nurses must document all medical care information as needed. The Nurse will report directly to the Camp Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assume responsibility and authority for decision making regarding medical emergencies.
  • Dispense medications as prescribed by camper’s physician and detailed on camper’s health form.
  • Maintain accurate logs of medication dispensing and treatment of injuries/illnesses, including documented incident reports as warranted.
  • Responsible for medical supplies, logs and medications stored and locked inside a cabinet in the Infirmary.
  • Review camper health forms prior to camp weeks as needed.
  • Present medical portion of onsite training to staff as needed.
  • Meet with Camp Director daily to review any camper issues and specific areas of need that may arise.
  • Administer over the counter medications as appropriate.
  • Assess campers and staff who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed.
  • Assist is stabilizing campers and staff requiring transportation to medical facility.
  • Documentation of all injuries and care rendered.  Nurses must document all over the counter medicines, first aid treatment, and communication with 4-H agents and parents regarding camper’s health.
  • All other duties assigned by the Camp Director.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies
  • Keep infirmary clean and organized
  • Ability to communicate and work with campers, staff and 4-H agents of various skill levels and provide necessary instruction regarding medical care.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Flexible – able to adapt to different environments and schedules
  • Responsible and hard working
  • Good bedside manner, friendly and personable
  • Strong assessment abilities
  • Prior experience with children
  • Team player

QUALIFICATIONS:   Current Registered Nurse License or LPN License.  One-year prior professional nursing experience preferred, preferably with youth.  Background check will be performed and approved by the LSU AgCenter’s Human Resource Management unit.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Nurses live in a dormitory across the hall from the Infirmary.  The dormitory has a private shower, A/C, wireless internet, etc.  All meals are provided.
